Omschrijving
Masafumi Sanai is part of a late twentieth century movement of Japanese photo diarists who capture seemingly uneventful, insignificant moments with an acute precision. Sanai's images would best be described as having a controlled spontaneity; although the subjects at first appear to be impulsive snapshots, these are in fact highly constructed and controlled images. Sanai's suburban Tokyo is predominantly masculine, greatly concerned with engineering and design and transfixed with the materialistic desires of modern Japan. His work is predominantly drawn to the minutiae of life and his inanimate objects have a curious warmth and character. The plates of Wakaranai have a compelling richness and are crisply printed, which further highlights the intelligent editing and wonderful layouts of this title. Like the objects and locations he photographs, Masafumi Sanai's images seem to slowly reveal their beauty and relevance as the pages are turned.
